American Legion Post 108 – We Are Family
American Legion Post 108 is one big happy family. Currently membership is made up of about 225 veterans of the US Armed Forces. But that’s not all! Our family extends to the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. We also have our American Legion Riders! The common thread among all: support of our veterans and their families.
Who are they? What is the difference? What do they do?

In the fall of 1930, five former servicemen met in an old house on Denny Johnson’s Orange Grove on Lutz Lake Fern Road in Lutz. On January 16, 1937, Post 108 received a Temporary Charter. It was an informal community consisting of former World War I Veterans. The decision to organize an American Legion Post resulted in a permanent charter on May 3, 1937, from the conclusion of these Veterans that the American Legion was the representative Veterans’ organization in this country. That conclusion has been proven true as today the American Legion is the largest wartime Veterans’ organization with nearly 13,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. Current national membership is over 2 million and combined with the American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion, membership in what is known as The American Legion Family, exceeds 3 million who care about America, Veterans, their families and our nation’s youth.
Since 1919, The American Legion has operated with a clear and enduring purpose: to serve those who have served, strengthen the nation, and uphold the values that define American democracy. That purpose is built on four foundational pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. These pillars guide the organization’s advocacy, outreach, and service across thousands of local posts and millions of members nationwide.
For more than 100 years, The American Legion has acted as the nation’s leading advocate for proper healthcare, economic opportunity, and legal benefits for U.S. military veterans. We continue to aggressively lobby for adequate funding of the VA health care system, timely access to facilities, fair rulings on benefit claims, and economic opportunities for those who have come home changed by their military experiences.

OK, so who or what are the Sons of the American Legion?
All male descendants adopted sons, and stepsons of members of The American Legion, and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918, or any time from December 7, 1941, to date, who served honorably, as set forth in Article IV, Section 1, of the National Constitution of The American Legion, or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of The American Legion.
The Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 108, has formed an Air Rifle Shooting Team.
Thanks to the generous grant from “The NRA Foundation”, we purchased Air Rifles and Cases, Pellets, Shooting Mats, Targets and Target Stands, Cleaning, and Safety Supplies.
The team is open to youth from the American Legion Post 108, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 108, The Boy Scouts of America, the Civil Air Patrol, the Sea Cadets, Jr. Patriots, and other youth groups.
The purpose of our Air Rifle Team is to develop safe, disciplined young marksmen while fostering a deep appreciation for the Constitution and the Second Amendment. Participants gain hands-on knowledge of firearms safety, responsibility, and teamwork in a structured environment that builds confidence, focus, and character – while ensuring every practice is challenging, positive, and fun. Auxiliary Unit 108 “We Are The Home Front”
With a heart of service, we are here to support the Legionnairs of our Post and all other veterans and their families throughout our community. Our Auxiliary works to instill patriotism into the community through collaboration and volunteerism.
Veterans’ Spouses (Male and Female), Daughters, and Granddaughters accepted. Auxiliary Unit 108 has been very active in supporting veterans at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in Land O Lakes. They are holding a membership drive and will continue finding ways to serve, support, and inspire. Incoming Auxiliary Unit 108 Barbara Lowell can be reached at 760-409-1081 for any questions.
American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded servicemembers and scholarships. Since 2006, Riders nationwide have participated in The American Legion Legacy Run to annually raise money for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001.
