Native American Code Talkers in World War II

During World War II, Native American Code Talkers played a crucial role in securing Allied communications. Their unique languages transmitted coded messages that were never deciphered by enemy forces.

The most famous group was the Navajo Code Talkers, but others participated, including the Comanche, Cherokee, and Choctaw.

Why use Native American Languages?

Native languages were oral and had no written form, making them almost impossible for Axis forces to interpret. Languages like Navajo are highly complex, with tonal nuances and unique grammatical structures that made them ideal for coding purposes.

In 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps recruited 29 Navajo men to develop a military code. The code was based on the Navajo language but added a layer of complexity by using specific words to represent military terms. For example, "Turtle" meant tank, and "Chicken Hawk" meant dive bomber.

Code talkers underwent intense military training and were embedded in critical missions across the Pacific Theater, including at Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. They were responsible for transmitting vital battlefield information quickly, such as troop movement and enemy positions.

The Code Talker's Impact on WWII

Axis forces never broke the codes developed by the Native American Code Talkers despite constant attempts. Their communication significantly sped up military operations. Key battles, such as the invasion of Iwo Jima, saw direct benefits from their swift and accurate transmissions. Over 800 encoded messages were sent without error during the Iwo Jima Battle.

Recognition and Legacy

For many years after the war, the contributions of Native American Code Talkers were not recognized due to the classified nature of their work. In 1968, the Navajo Code was declassified. 2001 President George W. Bush awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to the original Navajo Code Talkers.
