Thru rain or sleet or heat or snow,

the American Legion Honor Guard will go.

To perform their duties on command

in honor of all those who defended this land.

Their gesture of good deeds for the family bereaved

will bring comfort and closure to what they have achieved.

-George Cox, Korean Veteran

History

American Legion designates an "Honor Guard" as a unit that provides funeral and/or graveside ceremonies in conjunction with local funeral homes and cemeteries. This unit may perform all aspects of the ceremony if no active military personnel are available or at the funeral director's request after consultation with the family. The ceremony would consist of flag folding & presentation, the playing of taps, and a rifle salute. In most cases, active duty military personnel will be available for the flag folding ceremony and the playing of taps. The active duty unit will provide the ceremony commander or leader. The post provides the Rifle Squad Commander and five to eight riflemen. The Post also provides flag bearers for the American, POW/MIA, Military Branch, and Legion colors.

Military Honors

The American Legion Post 108 Military Honors Ceremony includes our Honor Guard Chaplain's prayer, a formal address by the Commander, the presentation of a poem, and a Holy Bible/Book to the family. The folding and presentation of the Flag to the family is followed by the three volleys of seven riflemen and the playing of Taps. When available, as part of the ceremony and if requested by the family, a Bagpiper may complete Honors to our Comrade and your loved one.
