Girls State & Girls Nation

Girls State

High school students who have completed their junior year are selected through a competitive process and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units for this program. During the program, they learn about the political process by electing officials at all levels of state government and participating in a mock government. Participants are assigned to mock cities and join either the "Federalist Party" or the "Nationalist Party."

The program's nonpartisan governmental, patriotic, and civic objectives are achieved with the help of dedicated ALA volunteers who facilitate interactive learning experiences. While the week is filled with many educational opportunities, there is also time for fun and the development of long-term friendships.

Candidates should have a strong interest in government and current events, and demonstrate leadership abilities. Although the structure of state and local government varies, all ALA Girls State programs adhere to the same fundamental core values, even if the content and methods differ.

Selection Process and Cost

Selection Process

ALA Girls State delegates are a diverse group of young women united by a common interest in learning and leadership. These "citizens" come from various backgrounds, including small towns, big cities, and rural areas, to participate in ALA Girls State elections. This diversity fosters a dynamic environment for a week of spirited, experiential learning.

American Legion Auxiliary units collaborate with local high school educators to identify girls who have demonstrated leadership qualities. Eligible female students are recommended and selected by the sponsoring American Legion Auxiliary units. The selection process varies by state, as each ALA Girls State program and/or unit determines its own method for choosing delegates. The number of participants also varies by state, depending on the resources available to the state's American Legion Auxiliary.

Female high school juniors interested in applying to attend ALA Girls State are encouraged to contact their school counselor, local American Legion Auxiliary unit, or visit the ALA Girls State program's website for information about the application process and deadlines.

Cost

The costs of ALA Girls State programs are covered by each state-level American Legion Auxiliary. Registration fees for delegates are typically paid by the sponsoring local American Legion Auxiliary unit, with additional support and funding sometimes provided by various civic and nonprofit organizations. Participants may incur minimal expenses for transportation, site-specific fees, or contributions to an optional service project.
